Account Manager Extraordinaire!
A solid marketing portfolio isn’t just a “nice-to-have”—it’s your ticket to impressing clients, recruiters, and fellow creatives.
...Even if you're fresh on the scene, you can still build an awesome portfolio with a little extra time and effort....
Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just starting out, your portfolio should scream “I know my stuff!” in the most stylish way possible (in our opinion).
Why Bother With a Marketing Portfolio?
A portfolio is like most other forms of promotion, digital ads, word of mouth, PR. Is it absolutely necessary? No. Can you market yourself without one? Sure. But does it make a difference?
A huge one.
A well-crafted portfolio sets you apart because not everyone does it. It’s similar to personal websites. Most marketers don’t bother, but for those who do, it’s an instant credibility boost (and shows off SEO skills, for example, in a way no resume line can).
Plus, data backs this up. According to a 2024 Forbes article, 65% of hiring managers are open to hiring candidates based on their skills rather than traditional education or work experience (Forbes, 2024).
And for freelancers, Freelancer.com emphasizes that showcasing your work increases your chances of getting hired for projects, as clients can directly offer projects through the Freelancer Showcase page.
What to Include (AKA Your Portfolio’s Superpowers)
What your portfolio should include really depends on who you’re targeting. The key is showing what matters to the person hiring you—nothing more, nothing less. If a company works on a project basis, structure your portfolio by project. If they value confidentiality, don’t share private data.
Here’s what your portfolio needs to have to make people go “Wow, I need to hire this person”:
A Kickass Bio:
A quick but engaging intro about who you are, what you do, and why you’re awesome. Bonus points for a mission statement that gives people a peek into what drives you.
Your CV (With a Photo of you)
A quick overview of where you’ve worked, what you’ve done, and any fancy credentials you’ve picked up along the way. Keep it neat, relevant, and up-to-date.
Easy contact info
If people love your work, make it stupidly easy to reach you. Email, phone, and links to your LinkedIn, portfolio site, or showreel—boom, done.
your best work
Quality over quantity. Pick your strongest projects, throw in some context (what you did, how it performed), and—if possible—back it up with data. Portfolios with measurable results (metrics, conversions, audience reach) increase hiring chances by 45% (HubSpot, 2024).
social proof (show them you’re a real person)
Client or employer testimonials = instant credibility boost. If people have said great things about you, show it off.
bragging rights
Awards, industry features, shoutouts—if you’ve been recognized for your work, flaunt it. No one else is going to do it for you!

Building the Ultimate Marketing Portfolio: The Fun Part
Now that you know what to include, here’s how to put it all together:
1. Pick a platform:
A personal website is ideal (Wix, WordPress, Squarespace), but a sleek Behance or Notion page works too. Just don’t rely on a messy Google Drive folder.
2. Create a killer home page:
Think of this as your digital handshake—clean, clear, and packed with personality. A short intro, easy navigation, and links to your best work.
3. showcase your work
Adding special code (called schema) to your website helps search engines understand your content more clearly. This can improve your chances of showing up in search results with extra features like FAQs, reviews, or product listings, making your site more attractive to users.
4. make it supereasy to contact you:
Yes, I’m repeating this because it’s that important. A contact form is even better than just listing an email.
“But I Have No Experience!”—No Problem.
Even if you’re fresh on the scene, you can still build an awesome portfolio with a little extra time and effort. You can also use this oppertunity to learn new things, or reinforce a certain skillset! This is something we at Nifty have done many, many times!
Create mock projects:
We love this approach, because the world is your oyster! Create a new brand for your favourite snack, build a fake local landing page for a superhero, or design a marketing funnel for a semi-realistic product copy.
An example of something like this, is a product video we made for Stillhouse Atlantic:

Our Head of Marketing and lead artist SP freelanced his way to where he is today, starting off at Freelancer.com drawing religious playing cards and Pixel Art Sprites for games, before focussing on building Nifty.
There is a steep hill to climb though when starting out, but keep on pushing those cheap crappy gigs and you’ll find your way, trust us!

It all comes down to how hard you are willing to work to build your portfolio up to where you want it to be. Keep on trying different tactics to grow your experience until you find something that works, and also don’t forget, that you yourself are the brand of you. Be sure to present yourself in person and online in a manner that befits clients and other professionals wanting to work with you!
Our last thougts about your marketing portfolio
“Marketing Portfolio” is actually an umbrella term we think, thus we’d like to address your portfolio no matter your vocation. Whether your an illustrator, digital marketer, animator or content creator, you’re marketing yourself and your personal brand through your portfolio. So put some extra effort in dammit!
Be sure to get some feedback on your portfolio before sending it to clients/employers. Perhaps even hire a designer on Fiverr.com, (if you’re not one yourself) to make sure you will stand out. A simple Word Doc just won’t cut it in the Age of AI!
